When ADHD Runs in the Family: Understanding Treatment Options for Your Child
Event: Adults With ADHD Education Group Meetup
Date & Time: Tuesday, Jan 20 — 5:00 PM ET
Guest Speaker: Dr. Karen Melendez
Parenting a child with ADHD can feel overwhelming especially when you also have ADHD. Decisions around treatment often come with extra layers of emotion, self-doubt, and conflicting information. Many parents find themselves asking not only “What’s best for my child?” but also “How do I separate my own experiences from my child’s needs?”
This meetup is designed for parents with ADHD who are raising children with ADHD and want a clearer, more grounded understanding of treatment options. Together, we’ll explore how medication and psychotherapy work, what each approach is meant to support, and why many families benefit from a balanced, multi-modal treatment plan that evolves as a child grows. The focus is not on pressure or judgment—but on helping parents feel informed, supported, and confident in their decisions.
We’re joined by Dr. Karen Melendez, Clinical Advisor and supervising physician at Animo Sano’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic. Dr. Melendez leads pediatric and adolescent services with a holistic, developmentally informed approach, emphasizing emotional resilience, collaboration with families, and long-term well-being. Her work with children and parents offers valuable insight into how ADHD shows up differently across generations—and how families can navigate treatment together.
Main Points We’ll Cover:
- How ADHD medication works (and common myths)
- What psychotherapy helps with and where it may fall short
- When a combined approach makes sense
- How treatment can evolve as your child grows
There will be time for discussion and questions, with space to acknowledge both your role as a parent and your lived experience with ADHD.
